Concrete Driveway Maintenance Tips

A new driveway is a big investment, and the first months set the tone for how it will age. Sweep often to remove grit that can grind into the surface. A gentle wash with a garden hose keeps dust from staining and shows off the fresh, even color.

Once the concrete has cured, apply a breathable sealer. It protects the slab from oil drips and helps resist water intrusion that leads to cracking. Reapply every couple of years, and choose a product meant for exterior flatwork in our hot Tennessee climate.

In summer, watch for standing water; drainage issues can soften the base and cause settling. If heavy trucks must park, spread the load with plywood sheets to protect the edges. Treat stains quickly with a mild degreaser so oil doesn't darken the surface.

Winter calls for extra care. Skip the rock salt and use sand for traction instead. Set snow shovels with plastic blades, not metal, so they won't gouge the surface. Small cracks can be filled with a flexible patch before they grow into costly repairs.

Consistent upkeep saves money and keeps curb appeal high. For more ideas on driveways and other projects, visit our home page, where you can see photos of recent work and request a free estimate.
